What is SEO?
SEO (search engine optimization) refers to the ways in which you can improve your website in order to achieve a higher organic (i.e. unpaid) ranking on the search results page of search engines (SERP) such as Google, Bing, Yahoo and the like. The ultimate goal is to increase the visibility of your site so when people search for keywords related to your business your site appears in the rankings.
How does SEO work?
In the past, techniques such as meta-keyword stuffing (i.e. repeating keywords in the code of your site) and link farming (i.e. linking content to irrelevant sites to improve your reach) were recognized as quick and easy ways to artificially improve SEO. However, the art of SEO has now become very sophisticated, with new and improved algorithms able to recognize when sites are using poor SEO tactics such as these, and reprimand them for doing so.
The focus of SEO now is on creating relevant, high quality content that people want to read and engage with. Follow these three simple ways to improve your SEO:
Three simple ways to improve your SEO:
Do your keyword research to determine which keywords are currently getting people to your site and which keywords people are searching for to find sites like yours. A good way to start is to think about what problems you are solving and what solutions you provide. By doing so, you can create a shortlist of your most important keywords.
Once you have determined these keywords, try to structure your site (including your blog) so that each page focuses on a particular keyword (i.e. one issue per page). On each of these pages, try to include the relevant keyword 3-4 times.
- Word Length
Search engine algorithms require a certain amount of content in order to determine the relevancy and quality of each of the pages within your site. Establishing a minimum word count is a great way to start, however it is equally important to keep your content concise to keep readers engaged. The recommended word count for content on a single page is 300-500 words.
- Image Labelling
Images on your site play a vital role in your SEO strategy. Not only do they amplify the quality of your site by providing visitors with an engaging multimedia experience but also, they feed into search engine algorithms to boost the ranking of your site.
For SEO purposes, all images should be labelled with Title, Alt Text and Description that reflects the content of the post – ideally using your relevant keywords. In addition, any image used should have illustrative purpose and reflect the topic of the post (it won’t be long before search engines can interpret the content of graphics!)
The important thing to remember when it comes to building a sustainable SEO strategy, is that you must consistently practise good SEO techniques in order to improve the quality of your site and ensure optimal results in search engines.
